Yesterday marked an exciting conclusion to our Flood Fighters Academy at WEngineer, where we’ve spent the past weeks empowering students with the STEM knowledge behind floods and disaster preparation. This final session was made even more special by the presence of Mr. Curt Luthye, Executive Director of the American Red Cross for Montgomery, Howard, and Frederick Counties.
Mr. Luthye’s visit was a highlight for our students. He shared insights into the cutting-edge technology and innovative methods the Red Cross uses to respond to emergencies, from predictive modeling to on-the-ground disaster relief tools. His stories of real-world problem-solving brought our curriculum to life, sparking inspiration among the next generation of engineers and innovators.
We want to give a special shoutout to Lenora Henry and Traci Horne for their incredible support in making this connection possible. Their efforts bridged the gap between our academy and the Red Cross, providing students with this unique opportunity to engage with a leader in disaster response.
The Flood Fighters Academy has been more than just a program—it’s been a journey to show students how STEM can address real-world challenges like disaster preparation and mitigation. By learning about the science of floods and hands-on engineering concepts, our participants are now better equipped to tackle environmental challenges in their communities and beyond.
We’re deeply grateful to Mr. Luthye for joining us, to our students for their enthusiasm, and to Lenora and Traci for making this collaboration happen. As this program wraps up, we look forward to building on its momentum with future initiatives that blend STEM, community impact, and leadership development.
Stay tuned for what’s next at WEngineer!
