An Energetic End to Electri-City!

Updated: Jun 1, 2022

Our Electri-City summer academy just ended today! We are proud to say that we had an incredible time with the most enthusiastic and eager to learn students yet! We had such a fun time teaching the students and greatly enjoyed hosting the activities.

In the first session of Electri-City, Power, students were introduced to Power and Electricity. Students analyzed and compared the different types of energy including: Geothermal Energy, Tidal Energy, Fossil Fuels, Solar Energy, Hydroelectric Energy, and Nuclear Energy. The students examined how each of the sources functioned, as well as how they are different from each other. Lastly, students designed their own windmill using origami, which could also be used in the week-long challenge.

In the second session, Energy, students dug deeper into Electricity by examining the transfer of the power sources into electricity and different currents. The students understood the differences between AC and DC Current. Then students discussed the transfer of electricity and currents through key pieces of equipment including power lines, transformers, and power stations. Lastly, students experimented with current and voltage by using a phet simulation. They were able to identify how the AC Current and DC Current create different results in the simulation.

In the third session, Skyscrapers, students were introduced to skyscrapers, their construction and their physics. To begin the session, students brainstormed about Skyscrapers and created a miraculous word tree!

Students then learned about measures taken to make sure skyscrapers stay strong and are safe for use. They also identified how Skyscrapers are built in a certain way to keep them sturdy enough so they do not move from wind. Next, Students compared many well-known skyscrapers. The students viewed rankings of skyscrapers by height including highest occupiable floor, architectural height, and tip. They learned about spires, antennae, and their applications in well known skyscrapers including the Willis Tower and the One World Trade Center. Then, Students examined three popular skyscrapers: The Burj Khalifa, Shanghai Tower, and the One World Trade Center. Students examined their architecture, height, and traits. Lastly, they engaged in a hands-on building activity where they were able to build their own skyscraper by utilizing the information they learned from the examination of other skyscrapers. The students had incredible ideas for their skyscrapers and went above and beyond in their creations!

In the fourth session, Transportation, students discussed how important Transportation is in our daily lives and in cities. We went through many modes of transportation in depth including Cars, Trains, Subways, and Bases. We discussed many major components including the third rail of a subway and the wheel and axle of cars. Also, we touched open the important concept of an assembly line which greatly impacted vehicles and their production throughout history. Then, students participated in a hands-on activity which allowed them to design and build their own vehicle. Although we originally intended to build a simple car, students went and beyond by attempting other modes of transportation including planes, trains, and metros.

In the fifth and final session, Pollution, students were introduced to a common problem in our society, pollution. Students learned about the impact of certain pollutants including Particulate Matter, Sulfur Dioxide, and Nitrogen Dioxide. They also learned about many types of pollution including waste pollution, air pollution, and sound pollution. The students then learned about the impact of pollution by examining the conditions in areas that have been severely impacted by pollution. Lastly, students participated in a review kahoot for a prize! The students did an incredible job answering the questions on the kahoot that covered information from all 5 days and sessions! Congratulations to the winners: Varsha, Simrah, and Marissa.

All the five sessions have been completed, and students did an incredible job understanding and completing the content and challenges. The last day to submit the academy-long challenge Build a City, is Sunday, July 11th, at 11:59pm. We will be judging the entries and choosing winners the following days.
