Bio Bosses Academy Recap

Updated: Jan 4, 2022

The Bio Bosses Academy has, unfortunately, come to an end. We had a lot of fun teaching all of the students and had a blast looking at all of their submissions for the academy long challenge!

In the first session of Bio Bosses, Students were introduced to the vast field of Prosthetics engineering. Students got a grasp of how a prosthetic limb works, how prosthetics are made, and the design process behind prosthetics. They were also acquainted with the various types of prosthetics and how they are used in today’s society. The session ended with the activity “Building a model hand prosthetic” where students were able to build a prosthetic for themselves out of household items.

During the second session of Bio Bosses, Students were introduced to the intricate field of Chemical engineering. Students got the history of chemical engineering which included: the “Founder” of chemical engineering, the origin of chemical engineering, and the year chemical engineering took off. Another topic that was discussed was the importance of chemical engineering. Students were taught what chemical engineers do and how their work helps improve and impacts our lives. Students were then introduced to the complex process of balancing chemical equations and were walked through various chemical equation problems. Students also got acquainted with what an alloy is, the different types of alloys, and its appearance in our lives. We concluded this lesson with a jeopardy which allowed the students to get a recap of what they learned, while having a blast competing amongst themselves.

On the third session of Bio Bosses, The exciting new topic of Bioengineering was introduced. Students received an introduction to CRISPR genes. They were introduced to the process of making CRISPR genes, the uses for the CRISPR genes, how engineers plan to use the CRISPR genes, and the importance of the CRISPR gene in advancing human genetics. Students were also acquainted with the topic of biomaterials. We discussed the various uses of biomaterials in the real world and the regenerative properties of some biomaterials. We also discussed the use and importance of Biomimicry through viewing various products that were inspired by animals. Lastly, Students were challenged to use biomimicry and create their own Clamshell opera house in TinkerCAD.

On the fourth and final session of Bio Bosses, the topic of Biomechanical Engineering was introduced. Students learned about the different applications of Biomechanical Engineering such as prosthetic limbs and sports equipment. Next, students dove into complex devices such as bionic limbs, and artificial organs. Finally, to conclude the session, students engaged in a hands on activity. Using popsicle sticks, straws, toothpicks, and rubber bands, students built their own “Extender Grabber” device.
