Electri-City Challenge Winner!

During Electri-City, students were challenged to use their creativity to design their own city using all the different concepts and aspects of engineering that were discussed in each of the five sessions.

We appreciate how hard the students worked in their projects and we were amazed in how they incorporated our lessons into their projects. We really enjoyed looking into the submissions and had an incredibly tough time picking the winners. Due to the high amount of submissions, we decided to choose a total of three winners. One overall design, the best overall non-CAD design, and the best CAD design. Please take a moment to check out some of the amazing designs.

The overall best design prize goes to Kanmani Elangovan. They built a city using the modeling platform TinkerCAD. Their design was incredible as it was brilliantly designed by using multiple ideas from all five of the sessions. The student did an amazing job labeling each and every major aspect of the city and explaining how it related to the lesson. The city includes the following:

- Tourist Attraction: History Museum

- Local Police Station, Fire Station, and Hospital

- Three Local Buses

- Multiple Groups of Power Lines

- A Bridge

- Three Windmills

- Skyscraper Housing Apartment Complex

- Roads to connect buildings

- Boats as Transportation across the waterway

- Benches for Relaxation

- A tech company Skyscraper that builds eco-friendly products

- Skyscraper with the purpose of entertaining visitors: Includes theaters, spas, and hotels

- Local Shops, Apartments, and Grocery Stores, Corporations

- Mall Complex

The design explored many of the key ideas from all five of our sessions: Power, Energy, Skyscrapers, Transportation, and Pollution. They used innovative ideas to create their designs by exploring new ideas that were not entirely discussed, thus going above and beyond what we expected. We greatly appreciate the amount of effort that was put into the challenge.

Here was Kanmani's submission:

The best non-CAD prize goes to Joe Obermier. They designed a fully functional city using their own household materials. Their fabulous city featured a complete subway system, a museum, a nuclear plant, and power lines just to name a few. This student really went above and beyond in terms of hard work and creativity. They included unique parts to their city and wowed the whole WEngineer team. Another exceptional part of his project was the delivery of his presentation. He was one of the few to demonstrate his city in a video format, and it was full of humor and creativity.

The best CAD prize goes to Sivateja Mallajosyula. They designed their city as an animation using a unique CAD software with high quality rendering. Their city includes:

Lights, Trees, Skyscrapers, Buildings, Roads, and Homes

They designed a simple city, but used incredible techniques including shading, virtual effects, lighting, and realism. Their presentation was smooth and was presented similar to a real world design. Sivateja’s camera work was very advanced as well, and it panned gently and showed the entire city. This presentation was at such a professional level that we were astonished to see a middle-school student create it!

Despite these three being the winners, it was quite difficult to make these decisions due to the various designs, each with their own strengths. All of the students put in a great amount of effort in the week-long project as well as the entire session!

Thank You
