Storm Riders Week 4 WEngineer Academy Recap!

What an amazing way to finish off the last full week of the Storm Rider academy!

The students started the week off learning about catapults and the forces surrounding projectile motion. Building off of prior knowledge on potential, kinetic, and mechanical energy, students learned how energies change when in motion. In this lesson, students were tasked with creating a “missile” that could save the world from an asteroid! Congratulations to the team Real Trees for scoring the most points with their catapult design and saving the earth from the asteroid!

On Thursday, students switched gears over to one of the most prevalent forces in society: friction. Furthering the student’s knowledge of friction calculations and the normal force, students were given a demonstration of maglev trains - a vehicle that levitates with magnetic fields. Students were then given the opportunity to put their knowledge to the test with a unique challenge: sleds. Experimenting with different types of materials and their respective levels of friction, team Safety Third was able to build a sled that traveled over 108 inches!
