WEngineer STEM Exploration Summer Camp 2023 Recap

What started off as a group of mere students, have now developed into the future engineering of the world. WEngineer is elated to have been a part of your child’s path on their way to success and we hope to see them again!

On Day 1, we began with an exploration of mechanical engineering as we delved deep into mechanical advantage, power, work, structural integrity, and simple machines. Through interactive lessons, practice questions, and kahoot competitions, students reinforced the knowledge learned during the lessons and improved their teamwork skills. They then further applied their new knowledge to building resilient bridges and lifting their peers up using a large lever and fulcrum. These hands-on activities provided our students the opportunity to experience real-world engineering scenarios. Overall, our engineers went home with a variety of mechanical engineering skills and knowledge, and were even more excited to start their robots!

To start off Day 2, we explored the field of electrical engineering, and its innerworkings. Using simulations and challenges, the students acclimated themselves to the world of binary, as they learned how to use 1’s and 0’s to create decimal numbers and represent “on and off”. With their newfound knowledge of binary, the students learned the basics of breadboarding, and how they were both inter-related. They quickly grasped the concept of circuitry, as they understood how current flowed in a circuit using three main components: The battery, resistors, and capacitors. We then got hands-on, as the students used wires, resistors, and capacitors to complete a task, to turn on an LED light! In the end, having mastered the realm of electrical engineering, the students worked together in ways that helped unlock each others’ willingness to learn, and were very excited to become one step closer to becoming an engineer!

On Day 3, students dove into real-world applications of basic computer science themes and topics, including AI. Our WEngineers learned coding fundamentals such as conditionals, variables, and functions. They then utilized this newfound knowledge to complete the "Castle Crashers" challenge on the VEX VR site, where they attempted to destroy castles using robots! Moving forward, students used the Replit site to code their own "Choose Your Own Adventure" Game! Ranging from games that taught investors on "how to make bank" to games that simulated a scary movie, students utilized Javascript and Python in their own creative ways. The day came to a wrap as students prepared to present their stories in tomorrow's "Sharktank" like presentation, which could be used to earn WEbucks for the next day's big challenge!

In classic WEngineer fashion, the concluding day (Day 4) culminated in a remarkable challenge. On this occasion, students put their amassed knowledge to the test. A battle-bot themed competition was employed to assess their skills in mechanical, electrical, and computer engineering. Apart from fortifying skills that directly align with STEM, students also seized the opportunity to enhance their public speaking prowess through code presentations. Our volunteers were truly impressed by the depth and diversity of the students' "choose your own adventure" tales, all crafted in either Python or JavaScript. As the day unfolded, students immersed themselves in activities spanning from utilizing WEbucks (earned from the code activity) to acquiring materials, obtaining robots, securing robot components, and constructing the ultimate battle bot. This progression culminated in thrilling face-offs.

We were honored to play a role in the learning journey of these brilliant students and to have had the opportunity to guide them in the realm of STEM. If you believe more students could benefit from our program, we would greatly appreciate it if you could consider leaving a review!
